![]() ![]() But of all The Simpsons memes, Steamed Hams reigns as undisputed king. ![]() Simpsons memes have focused on all sorts of things – popular memes have taken their cues from news events, from weird fragments of animation, even from the early-00s filesharing platform Limewire. It’s just that this humour is produced from the bottom up, on meme pages like Simpsons Shitposting. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of good, fresh Simpsons -related humour out there. Somehow still-uncancelled after almost two decades of sloppy plots and tired gags, it currently – in the wake of the Apu controversy – seems determined to debase itself still further, clinging on as long as it can in the hopes it might somehow magically devise the exact optimal amount of racism. The Simpsons itself – I mean the still-ongoing show – has long since dwindled into irrelevance. ![]() The reason for this is, of course, that in the meantime the ‘ Steamed Hams’ sketch has become a meme. But now I knew every word, every frame, every beat of the rhythm of its timing. Nowadays, something feels very strange about this sequence: the last time I’d watched the episode, probably about three or four years ago, the bit could have just completely passed me by. The other day, I was watching The Simpsons season 7 episode ’22 Short Films About Simpsons’, when I got to the bit where Principal Skinner invites Superintendent Chalmers over for lunch, accidentally ruins the roast he’s prepared, and ends up serving his guest ‘steamed hams’. ![]()
